You're not one of us, are you?
For ‘Smash the Narrative’ an art competition, I made this light and glass installation.
Nationality is not just what’s in your passport. Even when you have the nationality you desire, you can still be shut out, because you don’t fit within other people’s limited perceptions of what that nationality is. Having the word ‘Dutch’ in your passport doesn’t mean you identify with Dutch or even that other people consider you Dutch. How does it feel when you are not part of your nationality’s population? What then is your identity?
What makes us part of a population? People constantly judge us to see if we fit in, if we are allowed to be part of the group. Even if you have an official document to prove you belong, judging eyes will follow you everywhere. Scrutinizing you, reflecting, interrogating. When they decide you don’t belong, you will be ostracized.

Voor de prijsvraag ‘Smash the Narrative’ heb ik deze installatie van glas en licht gemaakt.
Je nationaliteit zit niet alleen in wat er in je paspoort staat. Zelfs als je de nationaliteit hebt die je wenst, kun je nog steeds buitengesloten worden. Als de beperkte visie van anderen niet overeen komt met wie jij bent. Dat er ‘Nederlands’ in je paspoort staat, wil nog niet zeggen dat jij je als Nederlander identificeert of dat andere mensen zou beschouwen als Nederlander. Hoe voelt het om geen onderdeel te mogen zijn van je nationaliteit? Wat is dan je identiteit?
Wat moet je doen of zijn om onderdeel te zijn van een bevolking? Mensen gebruiken continue hun vooroordelen om te kijken of we in hun groep horen. Zelfs als je een officieel document hebt dat bewijst dat je erbij hoort, veroordelende ogen blijven continue op je gericht. Ze onderzoeken je, spiegelen zich aan je en ondervragen je. Wanneer ze besluiten dat je er niet bij hoort, wordt je uitgestoten.
